Wanting something other than what Allah has decreed in times of loss and hardship is a sign of heedlessness and a lack of trust in His wisdom. As Ibn Ata’illah states in his Hikam, “Your wanting to withdraw from everything when Allah has engaged you in the world is a hidden desire, and your wanting to engage in the world when Allah has withdrawn you from it is a fall from high aspiration.” When we face trials—whether loss of wealth, health, or loved ones—our hearts may long for ease, questioning why difficulties have befallen us. Yet true wisdom lies in surrendering to His decree, knowing that every hardship carries hidden mercy, purification, and nearness to Him.
